The Irvingia programme addresses this issue head-on by equipping women, most of which are farmers with the knowledge and tools to minimize post-harvest losses.

The Irvingia programme a brainchild of Ecological Balance Cameroon and generously supported by the New England Biolabs Foundation, is redefining the relationship between people and the environment. By focusing on empowering women with skills for economic independence through sustainable practices. Irvingia is creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Through a series of comprehensive training programs, women learn advanced techniques in harvesting, handling, processing, and storage. These skills are essential for extending the shelf life of their produce, reducing waste, and increasing their income. They learn about the importance of drying, canning, and other preservation methods to extend the product’s lifespan.

The Irvingia programme goes beyond basic training. It emphasizes the importance of value addition to maximize farmers’ income. By transforming raw products into processed goods, farmers can command higher prices in the market. Ecological Balance Cameroon provides these women with access to modern equipment and expertise to facilitate this process.

For example, pear,castor nuts can be transformed into pear and castor oil, while fresh vegetables like mushrooms pepper, ginger can be dried or powdered. These value-added products not only have a longer shelf life but also provide a wider market, including urban consumers who demand convenience and variety.

Through the Irvingia programme, Eco Balance is committed to gender equality and youth empowerment. By providing training and support to women and young people, the project is creating opportunities for these often marginalized groups.
